Health Visitors

What is a Health Visitor?

Health visitors are registered nurses or midwives who have undertaken additional training to become specialist community public health nurses. They play a crucial role in ensuring children from birth to five years old and their families have access to necessary health support, focusing on the promotion of health and prevention of illness.

The role of Health Visitors

Health visitors lead the Healthy Child Programme (0-5 years) aiming to give every child the best start in life. They work with families from the antenatal period until the child reaches five, focusing on early identification of health needs, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and prevention of health issues. They provide support across various areas including:

  • Parenting and new baby support
  • Advice on feeding, nutrition, and healthy eating
  • Monitoring growth and development
  • Supporting maternal and infant mental health
  • Promoting safety and accident prevention

Health visitors are pivotal in recognizing at-risk children and ensuring appropriate interventions are made to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

How Health Visitors can help

Health visitors provide a tailored service to meet the diverse needs of families. This includes home visits, facilitating clinics and groups, and working closely with other healthcare and social care professionals to ensure a holistic approach to family and child welfare. They play a key role in:

  • Ensuring children are protected and safe
  • Supporting families to achieve the best health outcomes
  • Reducing health inequalities through targeted interventions
  • Promoting the physical, emotional, and social development of children

When you should see a Health Visitor instead of a GP

Visiting a health visitor is essential for routine child health surveillance, vaccinations, and when seeking advice on common health issues and parenting challenges for children aged 0 to 5. While GPs manage acute and chronic medical conditions, health visitors focus on preventive care, health education, and supporting families in the early years.
